Some people believe that swaddling a baby is outdated and ancient. Swaddling has been around since 4000BC and there’s many reasons why this practice is still used globally today. It’s also one of the first things a midwife will show you when you have your baby.
So let’s bust some myths 👇🏼
Myth #1: BABIES NEED THEIR HANDS TO SELF SOOTHE.
Babies don’t need their hands to self soothe. Keeping their arms swaddled prevents startle reflex and encourages longer sleep.
Myth #2: BABIES GET TOO HOT WHEN THEY’RE SWADDLED.
Swaddling doesn’t overheat your baby. The room they sleep in should be at a comfortable temperature. Some babies only wear a nappy under a swaddle, and in cooler climates, babies wear layers.
Myth #3: SWADDLING IS UNCOMFORTABLE.
Babies have spent more time in the womb all curled up and that’s how they like it. Creating a womb like feeling for them is comfort. You also would swaddle them allowing a little wriggle room, just as they did in the womb.
Myth #4: SWADDLING PREVENTS EXPLORATION.
Babies who are swaddled are generally not at the exploration stage in life. They’re to be swaddled until they show signs of matured development. Remember that newborns can be very easily overstimulated and overwhelmed. So keeping them calm is beneficial for them.
Myth #5:IT’S HARD TO TRANSITION A NBABY OUT OF SWADDLING.
Once babies develop, there’s no turning back for them. Their world is opening up and it’s very exciting. You will see signs of maturity when they start exploring and become more engaged in activities.
Myth #6: YOU CAN USE ANY BLANKET TO SWADDLE YOUR BABY.
You ideally want something that is breathable and lightweight. Especially if you’re putting layers of clothes on your baby underneath. The Mama Collective swaddles are bamboo/cotton which is perfect for regulating a babies body temperature and more safe to use. Myth #7: SWADDLING IS AN OUTDATED PRACTICE.
Current research shows that swaddled babies develop emotionally faster than babies who were never swaddled as an infant.
Myth #8: IT ONLY HELPS WITH MORO REFLEX
